SISTER ROSE'S ORPHANAGE IN GOGOUNOU
The History of the Center: A Legacy of Compassion
The Center for Children in Vulnerable Situations was established in 1993 by His Excellence Bishop Nestor Assogba, of blessed memory. In its early years, the Sisters of the mission focused on rural outreach, providing essential education to local women on hygiene and nutrition to combat child malnutrition. The Center's purpose evolved significantly three years later, following a call to assist a young widower who had lost his wife during childbirth. Shortly thereafter, the Sisters took in another infant found abandoned in an isolated room. These events marked the humble beginnings of the orphanage. Over time, the Center also became a sanctuary for young girls fleeing forced marriages and seeking protection. Through these acts of service, the mission transformed into a dedicated refuge for children and young women facing extreme hardship.
Activities and Mission
The Center dedicatedly cares for orphans and young girls in difficult circumstances, including those escaping forced marriage or originating from families living in systemic poverty. A primary focus of the mission is to provide these children with access to education and a stable school environment.
A Vision for Self-Sufficiency
To ensure the long-term sustainability of the Center, a project is underway to develop one hectare of land. This initiative aims to foster self-sufficiency through:
- Agricultural Development: Cultivating vegetable gardens to provide fresh produce.
- Pisciculture: Planning for fish farming to enhance nutritional resources and internal income.
The Center remains deeply grateful for the generosity and compassion shown by its supporters. May the Lord's blessings be upon all those who contribute to this mission of love.
Current Impact and Demographics
Today, the Center provides a home and a future to 44 children and young people, each receiving tailored care according to their age and needs:
- Early Childhood: 29 children between the ages of 0 and 7 receive essential nutrition, healthcare, and a safe environment to grow.
- Education: 8 older children are enrolled in school, pursuing their primary and secondary education.
- Vocational Training: 7 young adults are currently undergoing professional training, gaining the practical skills necessary to enter the workforce and achieve independence.
The Partnership with Ampelos Luxembourg ASBL
Ampelos Luxembourg ASBL plays a vital role in sustaining the Center’s daily operations and long-term goals. Through the generosity of supporters, the association has made significant contributions to improve the children's quality of life:
- Nutritional Security: Ampelos funded the construction of a large-scale poultry house. This facility provides a consistent supply of eggs and meat, ensuring that the children have access to essential proteins for their growth and health.
- Essential Supplies: The association provides ongoing support for the purchase of food staples and specialized infant formula (powdered milk), which is critical for the 29 infants and toddlers currently in the Center’s care.
- Daily Sustenance: Beyond infrastructure, Ampelos ensures that the basic needs of all 44 residents are met, allowing the Sisters to focus on the children's education and emotional well-being.
